If you could go back in time...and witness any event...where would you go?

When Dr. Tom Greenbaum faces that question after successfully discovering the secret to time travel, he knows the time, place and event he will witness the death and failed resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Dr. David Goodman, Tom’s colleague and closest friend, follows Tom into the past, attempting to avert a time-space catastrophe. Forces beyond their control toss them into a dangerous end game, where they are tempted by evil characters, betrayed by friends, pursued by an assassin from the future and haunted by a demon that cannot be killed.

This Tenth Anniversary Edition of The Didymus Contingency contains freshly edited text with a new premium layout and author’s note detailing how the screenplay that nearly became a movie, became a novel instead. And for the first time ever, print readers can purchase the book in hardcover.

I have to admit...I'm late getting to this, the first novel by Jeremy Robinson. I'm not sure why it took me so long. It's right up my alley in terms of my interests...time travel and biblical accounts. I've read most of Robinson's books with gusto. But for some reason, this book wasn't much of a priority on my list of books to read. What a mistake that was! I absolutely loved it! And honestly, after reading this book, it's no wonder that Robinson went on to become one of my favorite authors out there.

One of the things that struck me most was the insight he had into the biblical account of Jesus's ministry. Even more, was the insight he had into a few of Jesus's personal relationships with His disciples and with his friends. I have a Master's Degree in Biblical Studies. I specialized in the New Testament. And while Robinson did take artistic liberties in creating this tale (it's a time travel story...focused on a period in history in which we have little recorded. How could he not take liberties?), much of it was very well researched and depicted accurately. I was completely intrigued with his portrayal of Judas, in particular. Especially the enigmatic account of his part in the Last Supper. In Scripture, the scene where Jesus hands Judas the bread, indicating who will betray him, isn't very clear. But Robinson's portrayal of this event is believable and as good a guess as anyone could make.

Furthermore, I read one negative review that criticized the book for flat characters and nothing but fast-paced action. Really? The action is what it's all about. Want a coming of age story of someone overcoming impossible personal odds to cope with something? Find a literary fiction book. This is a thriller. Action is where it's at! However, I'll say that I enjoyed the characters in this story...good and evil characters alike. But no matter how well-developed characters are, without action in a thriller novel, the author would have failed miserably. Thankfully, Robinson knows his action very well.

Other negative reviews of this book have focused on the lack of time paradoxes, I personally say, "Bravo!" I loved this story because of the fact that Robinson used a different approach to time travel than most sci-fi stories. Whereas, in Doctor Who, there are certain fixed points in time that can't be changed, Robinson posits that all of time is fixed. This, to me, makes the most sense...especially if the universe is created by an all-powerful and organized God (which I believe).

Of course, this brings us to the topic most of the negative reviews seem to harp on. It's Christian perspective. I'm sorry. Did these readers NOT read the book's description? How could you not know what you were getting when you read it? I don't fault a person who doesn't like the story for its theistic worldview. That is a matter of taste and choice. But I don't understand how people can penalize an author for writing what is on his heart. I've read tons of books by authors who attempt to tear the Christian faith apart. I've never once written a negative review because of that fact. Still, I personally loved the Christian viewpoint in this tale, and will wholeheartedly spread the word of the wonders of The Didymus Contingency to all my friends and family. As a matter of fact, I've already bought a paperback edition specifically to give to my mother. And in my opinion, there should be no greater compliment to Mr. Robinson than that.

Oh, side note: I also listened to the Audible edition of this book, narrated by R.C. Bray. Once again, Mr. Bray killed it. His performance was top notch. His vocalization and characterizations were superb. Especially his portrayal of the demon-horde, Legion. Amazing!

The Didymus Contingency Tenth Anniversary Edition eBook Jeremy Robinson Reviews

I was disappointed in this book. The idea of a modern-day non-believer going back in time and witnessing Jesus's crucifixion with the idea of debunking Christianity had really gripped by imagination, however, this book did not quite meet my expectations. For one thing, I really could not get into the Evil Corporation action/adventure part of the plot, even though I love action/adventure stories.

The book begins with Tom Greenbaum, an atheistic Jew, arriving in Zambia to visit his missionary wife Megan. As it happens, just as he arrives the mission is being attacked by Zambian men who are trying to get the missionaries to recant Jesus and killing them when they refuse. Megan dies in Tom's arms. Thus is set the main story which is Tom's hatred of Jesus.

Twenty years pass, and Tom, who is a quantum physicist, along with his partner, David Goodman, a Jew turned devout Christian, has been working for the last eighteen years on creating time travel. They at last succeed, then (apparently) their future selves send stuff back to them along with watches that are time travel devices. That evening, Tom gets drunk and angry at Jesus all over again, steals a time travel watch and goes back in time to watch Jesus not rise from the dead on Easter Sunday, thus proving that Jesus was a fraud and the whole of Christianity is based on a lie. For some reason that either was not fully explained or that I didn't catch while reading the book, Tom ends up not on the day Jesus died, but two and half years before. David follows him into the past fearing Tom will do something to change history, and they end up following Jesus during his ministry. The fact that Tom and David end up in 28 AD while other people chasing after them end up in 30 AD added to my confusion. Maybe Jesus made it so. I don't know.

As for the Jesus in the book, that was the best part, and the reason I'm giving the book a 3 star review. As a Christian, I will never read the story of Jesus and not be thrilled, and Robinson's Jesus is a real human. As the Bible says, He came eating and drinking. Robinson's Jesus also came joking and laughing. I liked that Robinson made Jesus a real character. Whenever I read Christian fiction that features Jesus, and the writer is terrified to put any words into His mouth that aren't in the Bible, I feel cheated. In this regard, I did not feel cheated at all.

I was hugely disappointed (and irritated) with the complete absence of the women of the Bible. Mary Magdalene and Mary, the Mother of Jesus are never once mentioned. (Robinson manages this by conveniently not having Tom and David around when the empty tomb is discovered, nor are they at the foot of Jesus when he is crucified.) Martha and Mary, sisters of Lazarus, are there, but only, I think, because they could not be left out from such a significant event as the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Oh, and so Mary could become Tom's love interest!

All-in-all, as I said, not a bad book. Tom and David were good characters, Jesus was very well-written, and the meeting of Jesus and Tom after the resurrection was quite touching. Still, I just cannot say that I really enjoyed the book. For me, it was okay at best.
For those familiar with Jeremy Robinson's many books, including the popular Chess team, this will come as a surprise. It was his first book, and very different. It is a true original in many ways. I would hate to categorize it, because that would give away some of the plot, but many have already called this a Christian novel in their reviews. I have read quite a few Christian novels, and friends are always surprised when I tell them this is my favorite. I love time travel stories, and this one is that. I would also complain about the sometimes wild liberties that Robinson seems to take with some of the Biblical characters, but he never has them truly act out of their character. I put this review in with the others who love it for its originality- at its heart, that is its greatest strength. The end result is far more Biblical to me than a lot of so- called Christian novels. I'm unashamed to say that the ending brought me to tears, but they were happy ones.
I got into the book thinking I might have read it. If I had, it was changed some and had a fresh affect on me.
I am a follower of Christ so the affirmation of Jesus blessed me. The depiction of His humanity was not an affront. We modern Christians tend to gloss His life instead of seeing Him as real.
The novel's action was nonstop. Fans of thrillers could enjoy The Didymus Contingency on the merits of its thrill ride. Sci-if fans could read it as another look at time travel.
Christian fiction fans can enjoy it on another level.
The telling of sacrifice, struggle with loss and redemption make Didymus compelling.
